Donkey Kong Country Returns HD has an unorthodox personality, but his main gimmick is that he can grab stones from the ground with his neutral special. The stone limits DK’s mobility, but it gives him more power and range with his attacks. It’s impossible for him to double jump while holding a stone. Rather than falling, he can jump off and use the stone as a projectile. Donkey Kong Country Returns brought classic 2D gameplay back to the series. Despite not staying as iconic as some other platformers, it felt fresh. There is a lot of level design in the series. Every platform feels intentional and part of the environment, whether it’s a festival structure, moving cargo, melting popsicle, or fruit-based platform. It doesn’t feel random or floating; everything is connected.
